Elementary season 7 on CBS finally premiered on Thursday, May 23, after almost nine seasons of being off the air. The show, however, opened with a tragic incident with Gregson (played by Aidan Quinn) falling victim to attempted murder.
According to showrunner Rob Doherty, the Gregson incident won't be quick to wrap up in Elementary season 7. This story will be quite complicated, and it's not yet even clear if Gregson survived the attack.
"It's something that we will mark over the course of the season, and in many respects, it will drive the season. It goes down even windier paths as Sherlock and Joan start to investigate," Doherty said, as per TV Line.
Gregson's prognosis following the shooting has forced Sherlock (played by Jonny Lee Miller) and Joan (played by Lucy Liu) to look for other resources to find the perpetrator in Elementary season 7 episode 1. This meant flying back to New York after spending some time in London.
However, this trip has put the duo in more danger than they anticipated. For one thing, Sherlock could end up in prison if someone alerted the authorities to his presence in America.
Elementary season 6 would have wrapped up the series for good last year with Sherlock settling down in London and Joan the following suit. Liu even changed her hair color to blonde because she was ready to move on from the series.
However, CBS changed its mind and wanted a seventh and final season. Thus, the writers needed to come up with a reasonable storyline to continue with the duo's work as consultants with the cops.
CBS gave Elementary season 7 only 13 episodes to play out its final year. The showrunner also told Entertainment Weekly that they have thought of exploring more of Joan's life in this installment and position her character for some big changes. It has been hinted in the past that Joan may be adopting a baby. Doherty did not nix this idea when talking to the press.
"We felt we had more stories to tell on that front. It's something that she will re-examine over this year," Doherty said.
Meanwhile, Elementary season 7 has a new nemesis in Odin Reichenback (played by James Frain). He will come off as chummy with the duo, but he has a dangerous agenda and motive for being too nice to Sherlock and Joan.
