No one could have anticipated what happened in the Billions season 4 finale episode, which aired on Showtime last Sunday, June 9. By the time the episode ended, former allies Axe (played by Damian Lewis) and Chuck (played by Paul Giamatti) have been at war once more, and it was like the first season all over again.
Axe tried to kill the new company his girlfriend Rebecca (played by Nina Arianda) built because he found out her deal with his ward and now his enemy, Taylor (played by Asia Kate Dillon). Axe called on Chuck for help to arrest Taylor for fraud in the Billions season 4 finale.
However, Chuck also had an ax to grind when Axe meddled with the medical license of Wendy (played by Maggie Siff). So, Chuck tried to cut a deal with Taylor to destroy Axe, but the student has learned from the best and turned the tables on all of them. At the end of Billions season 4, it was Taylor who had the upper hand as Axe and Chuck have become enemies yet again.
Billions showrunners Brian Koppelman and David Levien confirmed via Entertainment Weekly that they had worked out this storyline since the end of the third season when Taylor established Taylor Mason Capital. They knew that the character was going to be back at Axe Capital yet they couldn't still work out the details of the when and how. It finally occurred to them to bring Axe and Chuck at war once again and have Taylor be part of the mix.
"Now we just have a better understanding of their characters, we know them so much better after all this time. So invariably it's going to be much more personal," Levien said, thus hinting of what viewers could expect in Billions season 5.
As for the fate of Rebecca, the showrunners told Vulture that the strength of her romantic relationship with Axe was severely tested in the Billions season 4 finale. They hinted that their relationship might not have survived after this betrayal, but Rebecca's character could still return in some capacity.
Billions season 4 have also foreshadowed Axe and Wendy's deepening relationship that viewers have speculated it will turn into romance. Levien, however, clarified that they won't mess this up in Billions season 5 as their connection is so rare for a TV pair that it won't likely turn sexual just yet.
Showtime has renewed Billions for a fifth season in 2020. However, the show's return date has not yet been set, and it probably won't be confirmed until early next year.
