The alliance between June (played by Elisabeth Moss) and Serena (played by Yvonne Strahovski) will start to crack inThe Handmaid's Tale season 3 episode 6. After Serena made that trip to see baby Nichole in last week's episode, she's having a change of heart about the decision to send the child away.
The teaser for The Handmaid's Tale season 3 episode 6 shows that June and Serena have different plans for the baby. June, the baby's biological mother, wants her child to stay in Canada, where it is safe. Serena, Nichole's adoptive mom, on the other hand, feels overwhelmed with the desire to have the child back despite the conditions in Gilead.
"Seeing her changed everything for me," Serena declared in the teaser after she saw Nichole. All she has left was a card containing the baby's tiny footprints in The Handmaid's Tale season 6 episode 5, which aired last Wednesday, June 19, on Hulu. But the teaser then cut to the scene were June strongly declared that as the child's real mother, she desires to let Nichole remain in the north.
Strahovski confirmed in an interview with TV Line that her character has changed her mind. It could erase everything that she and June have fought against.
"She can't think of anything else really. It's just so overwhelming for her that it just completely takes over everything," the actress said. "For Serena, this season is so much about the battle between all her inner conflicting emotions. It's a battle between the mind and the heart because in a way, Serena did learn the biggest lesson at the end of Season 2."
Serena's husband, Commander Waterford (played by Joseph Fiennes), has ramped up his campaign to have the baby back in the family in The Handmaid's Tale season 3. He has been creating one video after the next to publicly broadcast so that the people in Canada will see and hear their plea.
That visit has wider ramifications for the Commander, June, Serena and even the baby's fate and thatThe Handmaid's Tale season 3 episode 6 is just the beginning.
The next episode of the series will air on June 25. The Handmaid's Tale also stars Ann Dowd, Madeline Brewer, Max Minghella, OT Fagbenle and Samira Wiley.
