Shameless season 10 is returning on Showtime sooner than expected. The cable network has announced that the show about the Gallagher family will premiere its new season by Nov. 3, 2019.
According to TV Line, Shameless season 10 will pick up exactly six months after the finale of season 9, with Frank Gallagher (played by William H. Macy) trying to exploit his access to prescription medication for his leg injury. This season will be the very first chapter without its lead star Emmy Rossum as Fiona, the glue who held the Gallagher family together.
But Showtime boss Gary Levine said that despite Rossum's absence, Shameless season 10 will still have plenty to give its loyal viewers.
"The stories are unbelievable, the characters are as vibrant as ever and that show has just got the unique tone on television," Levine said, per Deadline. "John Wells and that talented cast continue to find new ways for the Gallagher family to live and amaze, so I don't know what the future holds, but the present is exciting."
Debbie (played by Emma Kenney) will stand as the new "mom" of her siblings after she's left with $50,000 by her big sister Fiona to take care of everyone. Fiona didn't exactly tell her family where she has moved, but creator John Wells said this would be immediately disclosed in the first episode back of Shameless season 10.
The character will not be completely dropped out of the show because her presence will still be acknowledged in Shameless season 10. Wells said that there are ways to make it known that Fiona is still in contact with her sister through text messages, letters, and phone calls.
Debbie's big brother Ian (played by Cameron Monaghan) will also be back in Shameless season 10 after he spent some time in prison. It is expected that he will rekindle his same-sex romance with Mickey (played by Noel Fisher) whom he has reunited with in prison.
Ian's first few scenes in Shameless season 10 will be shot in prison, but the showrunner hinted that he won't be in there for long. It's unclear, however, if Mickey will also get out sooner since he's crime is graver than Ian's.
Meanwhile, Macy told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018 that his giving himself at least two more seasons to do Shameless.
"When I think about acting them my back starts to hurt a little bit," the Emmy-nominated actor said with a laugh. "I know I want to do another season or two, and after that we shall see."
