The phenomenal series Euphoria has just concluded its first season and it's truly a lot to take in for fans who have been following the teenagers' story for the past eight weeks. The season finale 'And Salt the Earth Behind You' made sure all of the characters got their fair share of screentime as their stories were pushed forward. However, there was one thing about Euphoria Episode 8 that truly had people talking. Is it possible that Rue Bennett died at the end of the episode?
The season finale opened with Rue Bennett's mother Leslie stepping in front of a church to read a letter she had written about her daughter. It appears to be a special event for Narcotics Anonymous where recovering addict's loved ones speak about their own struggles. After all, Rue is clearly in attendance along with several other people who have been attending her meetings. However, things get more complicated in Euphoria Episode 8.
It is revealed that Rue had been taken to the hospital because of a kidney infection. She seems truly happy about being in the hospital especially when Jules Vaughn comes to visit her and helps her prepare for the big dance. It certainly looks like things are working out so well for the two of them. Unfortunately, that rapidly changes as Rue realizes Jules is still keeping contact with her new friend Anna.
At one point, Rue confronts Nate Jacobs about what he has done to Jules and Rue's dealer Fezco. Nate fires back by telling Rue that Jules will immediately forget about her after high school. Later, Jules admits to Rue that she loves her as well as Anna, prompting Rue to suggest that they run away together. Although Jules quickly accepts the idea, Rue hesitates when it's finally time to go.
Rue's hesitation leads to her having to break up with Jules, who leaves her alone at the train station. A tearful Rue rushes back home and immediately relapses. As a result, she gets a drug-fueld dream where she sees her family and is backed by a choir that joins her in song.
It's a weird conclusion but one that has people wondering about what's really happening in the finale. Was Rue's mother actually reading a eulogy for Rue's funeral? Was the song-and-dance number simply a cinematic way of showing Rue's second and possibly fatal overdose? Perhaps the truth will finally be revealed in Euphoria Season 2.
HBO has already confirmed Euphoria Season 2. However, the new chapter of the series has not yet been given a release date.
