Arrow Season 8 may be the last time fans are going to see Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) after the previous season finale revealed his fate. However, executive producer Marc Guggenheim teased there would be a big twist, and the show would end in a much unexpected way.
Guggenheim said people think "very binary way" of the show's ending. "'It has to be X or Y.' I think we have Z planned," he said at TCAs.
Despite Oliver's impending death, Amell himself said Arrow Season 8 might have a happy ending. According to We Got This Covered, the 38-year-old star might be hinting his character might change destiny again and escape his supposed death in the crossover, Crisis on Infinite Earths. However, there might be more of that, given Guggenheim's teaser about "X or Y."
Guggenheim has been hinting about the unexpected ending before. In a talk with ComicBook at the recent San Diego Comic-Con, he said the show's final season might have a "character-based" finale, in contrary to the question-based ending just like what Game of Thrones had.
"The good news is unlike Game of Thrones or unlike Lost, was not burdened with having to answer a question," he said. They don't have to answer who is going to seat on the Iron Throne or what island they have to discover. So, there will be more like a character-based ending in Arrow Season 8.
But, they also have a crossover to think of. They are quite confused about how to end the series while doing Crisis on Infinite Earths. They also question what the series finale will become, but proudly said they already have planned how to do it.
Guggenheim revealed he is now excited about Arrow Season 8. His main goal is to make fans satisfied with its ending, and he feels lucky they don't have the challenges that Game of Thrones or Lost had. They don't have any problems with ratings, too.
But, Guggenheim admitted he feels the pain of the showrunners David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Damon Lindelof. He then declared it is hard to satisfy everyone with the show they are doing.
He also thinks that when a showrunner ends a series, there will be an initial reaction to the conclusion and how it will stand the test of time. "Those two things are not always the same," he added. Arrow Season 8 will be out on Oct. 15, on The CW.
