The Last Kingdom season 4 cast and crew have gone back to the set to complete filming. Following a short break, the actors have been posting actively on their social media pages to confirm that the cameras are rolling once again.

Filming for The Last Kingdom season 4 commenced in mid-April 2019, or four months since Netflix announced its renewal. According to the show's official Instagram page, the period drama is likely primed for release sometime in 2020.

So far, the streaming platform has not released any teaser or trailer for The Last Kingdom season 4. However, some members of the cast have teased that the new installment will be much more intense, as well as full of surprises.

"The battles are going to be a lot more detailed," actor Arnas Fedaravicius (as Sintric) shared in an interview with Winter Is Coming. "In terms of storytelling, we're reaching a new level."

Fedaravicius also hinted that they had to film a difficult scene involving a lot of water. Without giving away anything, the actor revealed that they had to" adapt the script due to the outcome of that particular scene."

The Last Kingdom season 4 is based on one of the books in "The Saxon Series" by Bernard Cornwell. In particular, this new installment will follow the fifth book "The Pagan Lord," where Uhtred of Bebbanburg (played by Alexander Dreymon) will finally challenge Aelfric (played by Joseph Millson) to his birthright.

Despite this mission of reclaiming Bebbanburg, Uhtred will still be pulled back to Winchester and help King Edward and Aethelflaed realize the dreams of their father, King Alfred the Great, to unite England. He's also going to deal with his feelings for Aethelflaed as his new romantic interest for The Last Kingdom season 4.

Aside from Dreymon, Fedaravicius and Millson, also returning for The Last Kingdom season 4 are Ian Hart (as Father Beocca), Emily Cox (as Brida), Timothy Innes (as King Edward), Eliza Butterworth (as Aelswith), Milly Brady (as Aethelflead), Toby Regbo (as Aethelred), Mark Rowley (as Finan) and Magnus Bruun (as Cnut). New faces like Stephanie Martini and Jamie Blackley are also joining the cast as Aethelred's new partner and right-hand man, respectively.

The Last Kingdom season 4 is also expected to have a significant time jump with Uhtred's children becoming older and fighting alongside their father's war. Netflix has confirmed there will be 10 episodes of this season. After this season, The Last Kingdom still has at least five more books to adapt from Cornwell's series.
