Sherlock Season 5 is still one of the most sought-after installments. However, BBC has not yet released any official detail about it up to this writing. Because of this, some fans are forced to speculate and predict the possible fate of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman's characters in the future.

It was, more or less, five years ago since series co-creator Steven Moffat confirmed that he has started planning for the storyline for Sherlock Season 5 with Mark Gatiss. In 2017, he told Radio Times that the popular British crime drama television series is not coming back soon since the Dracula series was about to start at the time.

However, Steven Moffat clarified it does not necessarily mean that the series would be canceled. "I vaguely assume we will do it again at some point. I don't think it will be very soon. It's due a longer gap," he said when asked about the yet-to-be-confirmed Sherlock Season 5. "It is still enormously successful, so there will always be a demand for it, I hope. And there is no upper limit on how long we can do it. Holmes and Watson can be 60 or 70," he went on.

In a recent interview with Collider, Martin Freeman revealed some details about the future of Sherlock Season 5. The co-star of Benedict Cumberbatch hinted that Detective Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson could still make a comeback despite the many delays. Martin, however, highlighted that he, along with Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss, and his other co-stars, are lucky to be working on what they love right now.

The 47-year-old English actor added that he is very much open to returning for another run, given that the next installment would be "really meaty and interesting." Martin Freeman noted Sherlock Season 5 could not premiere with something that is of average quality. He added that the yet-to-be-confirmed fifth installment should feel "really, really special."

To recall, reports have been claiming that the hectic schedules of Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Steven Moffat, and Mark Gatiss have contributed to the delay of Sherlock Season 5. As a matter of fact, Benedict is, currently, working on the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. Steven and Mark, for their part, are working on a new version of the Dracula series now.

Other rumors suggested that a supposed beef between the series' lead stars is, also, among the many reasons why BBC has not yet confirmed the supposed fifth season of the popular show. While this report could be true, it should be noted that neither Benedict Cumberbatch nor Martin Freeman has confirmed the said bad blood between them. So, avid followers of the two should take these rumors with a grain of salt until everything is proven true and correct.
