Ozark season 3 has yet to premiere on Netflix, but showrunner Chris Mundy is dead set on preparing the show for its inevitable end. The dark drama series about a family involved in money laundering and drug activities has been a strong performer on the streaming platform's library, but why is Mundy preparing for its end?
Speaking with Variety, Mundy said that the show could have at least two more seasons of stories to tell after Ozark season 3. However, he also revealed that the drama series might sign off in as little as four seasons or as much as seven seasons.
For Mundy, who has written the season finale of Ozark season 1 and 2, crafting the final story of the season is always the easiest. He said that after Ozark season 3, they will still evaluate where the show could go - that is if it's renewed on Netflix.
"I've been lucky because I've written the finale throughout, including this upcoming third season," he said. "And if you've built your season right, they're the easiest episodes to write - at least for me," he added. "But finales have so much story: They're planting things, they're not a lot of filler and, at least the way Ozark has worked, it's usually mostly your cast; there's not a lot of outside sources because you're not introducing new people at this stage in the game."
Mundy also shared in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that Ozark season 3 will find Ruth (played by Julia Garner) leaning on to Marty (played by Jason Bateman) as a father figure. Relied upon more responsibilities at the riverboat casino, Ruth will blossom with more confidence, but she will also have this need to belong to a family, after having lost her dad in Ozark season 2.
But the showrunner also said that as the story of Ozark season 3 develops, Ruth will start to question if she wants to be associated with the Byrdes. Meanwhile, Wendy (played by Laura Linney) will unravel even more to take control of the family and her husband, Marty.
Viewers will recall that in Ozark season 2, Wendy let one thing slip by Marty as she made a deal with the lawyers of the drug cartel behind his back. The Byrdes was supposed to be on their way out of this money laundering mess, but Wendy's last move puts them right in the center of the heat.
Netflix will likely release Ozark season 3 in early 2020.
