E-scooters are increasingly becoming more premium lately, and it appears that the trend will only continue as German carmaker Mercedes-Benz confirmed its imminent entry to the market. The two-wheeler adorned with the iconic logo will launch next year though the company simply provided an ETA -anytime in the early months of 2020.
The new bet from Mercedes-Benz was revealed at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show staged last week but as noted by The Verge, it seemed intended that the announcement would be as low-profile as possible. Fact is, no specific details on the upcoming toy have been furnished except the accompanying press release from Daimler, which is the MB brand's parent company.
In the release, MB said the E-scooter models would be manufactured in collaboration with Swiss firm Micro, which has made a name globally for two-wheeler rides such as Merlin, Suspension, Condor, and the Falcon.
Like its rival kinds, MB's E-scooters will be chiefly designed as an environment-friendly vehicle. Per the company: "These agile, electrically powered scooters are the perfect way to cover short distances quickly and without harming the environment."
MB added that its line of E-scooters would be ideal for those wanting portability while getting around as each of the models to be released "is specifically designed for the first or last mile, making it the perfect companion for those wanting flexible mobility solutions."
Needless to say, the German carmaker's latest move is in response to the uptick of interest that E-scooters have been generating in the past few years. As The Verge mentioned on its report, it seems evident the market segment is experiencing a boom and big car brands - BMW, Ford, and Volkswagen, to name a few - are lining up to get a piece of the action.
To reiterate, details so far on the Mercedes-Benz have been scant but a look on its manufacturing partner, Micro, can offer a glimpse of what exactly to expect. According to Cars Guide, the Swiss E-scooter maker sells models that run at starting range of 10 kilometers and up to 25 kilometers.
All existing Micro E-scooters "boast a top speed of 25km/h and a 500-watt electric motor, while the Falcon can charge in just 60 minutes compared to the Condor and Merlin's 180-minute recharge time," the website's report added.
It is projected too that MB will replicate most if not all of the specs and features currently found on Micro's line of offerings, among them "front suspension, automatic light, fold-down handlebars, and in-built information display."
As for the pricing, Micro E-scooters, specifically the high-end builds, are being sold over the $1,000 mark in Australia, which should indicate that Mercedes-Benz is likely to market its own models within the same price range.
