Avid followers of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series have been patiently waiting for the release of its sixth book. George R.R. Martin announced that he has started working on The Winds of Winter novel in 2011. However, up to this writing, there are no concrete details as to when the much-awaited tome is likely to hit the shelves.
George R.R. Martin has been giving hints about the possible release date of The Winds of Winter. In 2017, the 71-year-old American novelist said that the sixth A Song of Ice and Fire book would be released in "late 2018 or early 2019," which obviously did not happen. In May, GRRM wrote on his Not a Blog site that he is likely to release the highly anticipated novel during the World Science Fiction Convention in Wellington, New Zealand in July 2020.
"Best leave me here in Westeros for the nonce. But I tell you this - if I don't have THE WINDS OF WINTER in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I'm done," George R.R. Martin wrote.
In a recent interview with WGN Radio, the veteran author revealed the reason why The Winds of Winter has been delayed many times over. George R.R. Martin said that popularity took a toll on him and his tight schedule has affected his writing process.
He added that, while he is blessed to have many fans waiting for him to release The Winds of Winter, a number of them are "extremely impatient" and "full of their own idea" about the fate of the series characters. George R.R. Martin even said he wishes that he could just work quietly just like before he got so attached to all the characters.
GRRM, previously, revealed that the ending of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series will be different from how the HBO series, Game of Thrones, came to a close. It can be recalled that the show had to move past the events of the book and change some parts of the original storyline just to keep their millions of viewers watching the series.
Though George R.R. Martin has yet to announce the official release date of the sixth installment of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, he assured fans that finishing the novel is currently his top priority.
