Is Anne With an E season 4 in danger of getting axed on Netflix? The show, which originally airs on Canada's national public broadcaster CBC, might be a casualty of the streaming wars.
According to Cinema Blend, CBC executives expressed that, like other content creators in the industry, they are also planning to set up their own streaming platform. Thus, a "breakup" with Netflix could be part of this plan.
This means that CBC will no longer honor their deal to create original content for the streaming platform. Instead, Anne With an E season 4 and other CBC shows that are also found on Netflix could be removed as these become exclusive CBC contents for their upcoming streamer.
This deal is similar to the Marvel and Netflix agreement. After Disney, Marvel's mother company, announced it was forming its own streaming platform to compete with Netflix, the latter cut off its deal with Marvel and canceled Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders from its library.
But, weeks before this news of CBC bolting out of Netflix, the streamer confirmed that all episodes of Anne With an E season 3 will drop by midnight of Jan. 3, 2020. The current season, on the other hand, will end its run on CBC in November after it premiered last Sept. 22, 2019, on television. As with the previous seasons, new episodes of Anne With the E only become available on Netflix a couple of months after it has aired in the Canadian network first.
Meanwhile, CBC has not yet announced whether Anne With an E season 4 has been renewed. Its fate is still up in the air, regardless of the deal between Netflix and CBC.
Anne With an E is based on a 1908 young adult classic novel "Anne of the Green Gables," which was written by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Created by Moira Walley-Beckett for CBC, the show follows the coming-of-age adventures of an orphan named Anne Shirley, played by Amybeth McNulty, who becomes the adopted daughter of the Cuthberts from Avonlea. The series also stars Geraldine James, R. H, Thomson, Lucas Jade Zumann, Dalila Bela, Aymeric Jett Montaz, and Corrine Koslo.
This young adult drama touches on themes like prejudice, bullying, identity, acceptance, and a sense of belonging to a community. Anne With an E expanded its scope to cover feminism and gender parity as Anne turned 16.
