ABC's new drama series starring Cobie Smulders as the private eye named Dex Parios is going to take a short hiatus. There will be no new episodes of Stumptown season 1 next week but the series will be back to air its fifth episode right before Halloween.
Stumptown season 1 episode 5, however, won't be a Halloween episode. Per the episode synopsis, the upcoming installment will feature Hoffman (played by Michael Ealy) asking the help of Dex in investigating a new case.
Hoffman is sure that Dex will not turn him down because the case involves her best friend Grey (played by Jake Johnson). In the teaser to Stumptown season 1 episode 5, Hoffman is seen telling Dex that Grey has gone missing and she might just be the one person who can help find him.
Meanwhile, with Dex will also be particularly stressed out in this episode because she has an upcoming interview. Since the beginning of the series, she has been trying to get her private investigator status in the city of Portland, also known as Stumptown.
Dex needs this certification so that the police will fully recognize her skills. Incidentally, Hoffman's boss, Cosgrove (played by Camryn Manheim) reiterated to Dex in the last episode that she need to have her licensed certified.
On the other hand, Cosgrove told Hoffman to take a break after the latter made mistakes at work that jeopardized their investigations. It's likely why Hoffman asks Dex's help in Stumptown season 1 episode 5 since he is officially not supposed to be working.
Stumptown, which debuted on ABC in September, is based on the graphic novel series of the same title. Smulders described her character as a former Marine who is suffering from PTSD but she won't seek any treatment. As a result, the ramifications of her emotional problems flare up in how she handles her life as she tries to self-medicate with alcohol, gambling, sex and being reckless in her work.
The show also features a character with Down Syndrome in actor Cole Sibus, who has the real condition. He's the one constant in Dex's life that keeps him grounded as his sole guardian.
ABC has not yet ordered Stumptown to a full season as of press time. The show airs every Wednesday night at 10:00 p.m.
