Camilla Parker Bowles knows that she will be on Prince Charles' side when he eventually ascends to the British throne. But, on what title, that remains unclear. Whatever title it is, the Duchess of Cornwall and her family already know what would be at stake when that day comes: more backlash from the public and media intrusion on her life.
It was revealed that Camilla is not the only one who fears for her future when Charles took Queen Elizabeth II's post. Even her own family is dreaded to the day that the Prince of Wales becomes King.
In her 2017 book The Duchess, royal biographer Penny Junor wrote that Camilla's family doesn't want her to be a Queen. Junor said at least one member of the Duchess of Cornwall's family is worried about Camilla's future in the monarch because of fear of backlash.
The family member told Junor that they want Camilla to do well and they fear that it will never happen when she becomes Queen. Camilla's family is already anticipating how Prince Charles' wife will be judged if she assumes the title of Queen.
"People might go a bit wild. The Queen who's been in our lives forever, the worship of Diana, and suddenly Queen Camilla. It's going to be such shake-up," Junor quoted the family member as saying.
Camilla's family added that they believe the Duchess will be better if she will become Princess Consort rather than Queen or Queen Consort. However, member of the Parliament Frank Field told Junor that Charles is most likely to press his agenda of making his wife the crowned Queen.
Some royal insiders agree and believe that the title Princess Consort for Camilla is nonsense. Royal expert Charlie Proctor insisted it is just right that when Charles becomes King, his wife Camilla should become Queen Consort.
But, Camilla herself doesn't want to be a Queen. The author noted in her book that all Camilla wants is to love and support Charles.
To this day, the official position of Clarence House remains the same and that is Camilla would be known as Her Royal Highness The Princess Consort when Charles becomes head of the British monarch. It was announced when Prince Charles and Camilla got married in 2005.
However, it is also worthy to note that any royal titles including Queen Consort or Princess Consort are conferred by the monarch which means, Charles. Once he becomes King, the final decision on what would be Camilla's title lies on him. He also doesn't need to consult the Parliament on whatever title he wants his wife to have.
