Network Operation Service (NOS) CEO Miguel Almeida revealed in a statement that the company, along with China's Huawei, will collaborate to establish Matosinhos as the first fifth-generation mobile city in Portugal.

Last Wednesday, Almeida stated, "The NOS 5G network is fully operational and piloted by the local authority, companies, and research centers for the development of leveraged use cases in this technology," as per Xinhua.

He added that 5G technology marks its partnership with China's technology giant Huawei. He also stated that this would be the beginning of creating research centers for the development of further technological advances in Portugal.

The project is the leading role of innovation in Portugal. It also signals further developments in other cities in developing more 5G networks in the coming future. The project would undergo test 5G solutions and services that would also contribute to the boom of innovative business markets and other institutions.

The 5G project is also the first of its kind in Portugal. It represents a milestone in the country's capacity to develop further into the telecommunications industry.

What Is The Coverage Of The 5G City?

Portuguese operator NOS and its 5G technology project with Huawei would utilize the 3.5 GHz band spectrum as per the National Communications Authority (Anacom) in Portugal for testing purposes. Furthermore, it would also establish about 20 radio stations to ensure the effectiveness and widen the scope of the 5G network.

In other news, Telecom Lead reported that Portugal's telecom market regulator Anacom plans to conduct an auction by next year to allocate the incorporated 5G frequencies to providers in the country.

The Anacom's decision is by virtue of the European Commission's plan to launch 5G services within countries signatory to such by the end of 2020. The proposal is also under consultation for 20 working days. The company is also expected to share the outcome thereof by January of 2020.
