It is no secret that Kate Middleton and Prince William had an on-again-off-again relationship when they were young. Despite the hardships at the beginning of their romance, the two made a pact that they would end up together no matter what.
Being in a serious relationship at an early age is not an easy feat, especially if your boyfriend is a member of the royal family. Kate and Prince William met at St. Andrews University in Scotland in 2001. At the time, they were only about 19 years old.
In 2002, Prince William decided to move from a college dorm to a flat with three of his friends, including Kate Middleton. From here, their romance started to blossom. For a good part of their relationship, they had a long-distance romance.
In 2007, due to the pressure from paparazzi, they broke up. However, as they had a strong love for each other, they got back together. Royal expert Katie Nicholl said that Kate and Prince William made "a marriage pact to take the pressure off their relationship" when they got reunited, per Heart.
They made the pact when they went to the island of Desroches in Seychelles to celebrate their reconciliation. In her book Kate: The Future Queen, Nicholl revealed that Prince William promised Kate Middleton that their relationship would be long term.
It was the first time that they seriously talked about marriage. "With the ocean before them and beneath the night sky, they made a pact to marry," she said. Nicholl explained that Prince William did that to take the pressure off their relationship and to assure Kate that they would end up together.
Talking about their split, via The Sun, Prince William said that they were both young at the time. They were still defining themselves as two people with different characters. Despite the break up, which gave them a little space, they managed to make things work out for the better.
Kate Middleton, on the other hand, admitted that she wasn't happy at the time. But, it made her stronger. She found out things about herself that she hadn't realized before. She even revealed that she got quite consumed by their relationship because she was young. So, she valued the space they had.
Three years after their reconciliation, Kate Middleton and Prince William got engaged. In 2011, they finally got married with a wedding dubbed as the wedding of the century. They now have three children -- Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 1.
