It looks like David Benioff, and D.B. Weiss will not be working on a new Star Wars film trilogy after all. The Game of Thrones showrunners has just confirmed that they will no longer write and produce the three new movies that are set to be the follow-up to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. But is it possible that it wasn't Benioff and Weiss' idea to leave the project in the first place? A new report suggests that Lucasfilm may have fired the duo from the films.

Back in February, it was announced that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would be writing and producing a new Star Wars trilogy after they completed work on Game of Thrones. The news was met with enthusiasm, and some fans even speculated that the new films would focus on bringing Knights of the Old Republic to the big screen. However, things quickly changed when the duo signed a deal with Netflix to write and produce new exclusive content for the streaming service. Unfortunately, the deal has caused Benioff and Weiss to be too busy to work on the Star Wars movies, as per Deadline.

"There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects," Benioff and Weiss said in a statement. "So, we are regretfully stepping away."

Although fans are understandably disappointed that the Game of Thrones executive producers will no longer go through with their Star Wars trilogy, there are also speculations that their exit was far from an amicable one. Some believe that Lucasfilm may have been upset when David Benioff and D.B. Weiss accepted the exclusive Netflix deal, although they had signed on to work on the Star Wars films first. In addition to that, the studio may have lost confidence in the duo after the backlash to Game of Thrones Season 8 and are concerned about what they were planning for the new trilogy.

Interestingly, it is believed that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was throwing shade at Benioff and Weiss in her statement about their departure from the Star Wars trilogy. "David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they can step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars," Kennedy had said. It sounds like Kennedy isn't particularly happy about the duo's schedule, either.

It is still unclear what will happen to the planned Star Wars trilogy that was abandoned by Benioff and Weiss. In the meantime, fans can expect to see Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker when it premieres on December 20.
