There is little doubt that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was the most successful animated film of 2018. After all, it won the Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards as well as the Golden Globes. Not surprisingly, a sequel has been confirmed, and it could bring back the Spider-People who appeared in the first movie. But will a surprising new character also be introduced to work with Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2?

The official Twitter account for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse had been teasing some exciting news in the past week. On Saturday, it was finally confirmed that Sony would be producing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, which is set for a 2022 release date. Unfortunately, there were no other details revealed about the sequel. Nevertheless, that hasn't stopped people from speculation on who will show up in the highly anticipated animated flick.

A new report suggests that Miles Morales will be teaming up with Spider-Woman in Into The Spider-Verse 2 but it won't be Gwen Stacy. The sequel could introduce the original Spider-Woman Jessica Drew, who is expected to work with the new Spider-Man in the film. Although it's an exciting possibility, the speculations are also causing major concerns among fans since it could mean that a certain character will be cast aside.

Although Gwen Stacy also goes by the code name Spider-Woman, she is more commonly referred to as Spider-Gwen. The character's story arc was connected to Miles Morales, and the introduction of a new female character could mean that Gwen's relationship with Miles could be in jeopardy. On the other hand, it is still possible that Jessica Drew will serve as a mentor to Miles.

But if Jessica Drew will be guiding Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, could this mean that Peter B. Parker is no longer a part of the sequel? The reluctant mentor had already gone back to his universe at the end of the first movie, and it is still unclear if he will return. Nevertheless, fans are hoping that they haven't seen the last of the grumpy Spider-Man.

The sequel is expected to bring back the voices of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Kimiko Glenn, John Mulaney, Nicolas Cage, and Brian Tyree Henry. The new cast members have not yet been announced, but stay tuned for more updates.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is scheduled for release on April 8, 2022.
