It’s no secret that Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage was a disaster. Despite sharing two sons together, the Prince and Princess of Wales just couldn’t work things out and eventually realized that a divorce was the best option for them.
Kenneth Rose, a veteran diarist, has a private journal about his encounters with the members of the royal family and people who they are close with. Although he died in 2014, his stories were still released, revealing a lot of things about the first family of England, especially the relationship between Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
In the journal, Kenneth Rose revealed that he spoke with Princess Diana’s stepmother, Raine Spencer, who shared that she felt bad for the Princess of Wales. “They don’t look to me like two people in love. They have different bedrooms and she never seems to want to touch him. When he says, ‘Give me a kiss,’ she does not respond. She has no artistic side to match his, which is a further gulf,” she said.
In 1994, Prince Charles shocked the world when he admitted that he was unfaithful to Princess Diana. The Prince of Wales was having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, whom he had a relationship with before getting engaged to the People’s Princess.
After learning her husband’s interview with Jonathan Dimbleby, Princess Diana decided to take advantage of the situation and invited television journalist Martin Bashir into Kensington Palace for an exclusive sit-down.
Kenneth Rose talked about Princess Diana’s explosive Panorama interview in his journal. He revealed that the Princess of Wales redid her statements multiple times until they looked sincere. Although the whole interview was just under an hour-long, the truth is that it was recorded for 17 straight hours as the People’s Princess was really keen on how it should be done.
It was also during this interview when Princess Diana said her infamous line. “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was quite crowded," the Princess of Wales told Martin Bashi.
Queen Elizabeth is known for wanting to avoid any controversy as much as possible. So when Princess Diana dragged the cheating scandal instead of stopping it, that’s when Her Majesty urged the Prince and Princess of Wales to divorce.
In February 1996, Princess Diana announced her separation from Prince Charles. Six months later, their divorce was finalized.
