Former f(x) member Amber Liu has been in hot water lately after she gave a comment on a viral video of a white police officer in the U.S. arresting a black man. Amber broke her silence after she received backlash and issued an apology for making what she called "ignorant" comment.
The K-pop singer sparked controversy when she commented on a viral video of a black man being handcuffed on a subway platform in San Francisco by white police officers for eating a sandwich. Many saw it as another instance of racism and police discrimination in the U.S. and Amber received backlash for not understanding the situation in what she watched.
Amber was first asked by her friends about her thoughts about the video. Then, she said the black man deserved to be reprimanded for not showing respect towards the officer.
In the same clip, however, Amber's friends argued that the black community in America has a history of tension with police officers. They also admitted that they don't understand what the community goes through in regards to systemic racism in the country.
Amber's name quickly trended worldwide on Twitter for several hours after her video was posted by YouTube channel Just Kidding News. The clip has been deleted from the channel since but some netizens have managed to save and shared it.
Amber issued an apology for her "snap judgement" comment. In her post on Twitter, the "Beautiful" singer admitted that she made an ignorant remark without understanding the whole situation. Amber also insisted in her post that she is against racism and discrimination and that she is equality.
"I'm so sorry I've negatively affected so many people because of my ignorance and I will continue to educate myself in this matter," she wrote at the end of her post.
Amber also responded to some comments on social media about her post. One K-pop fan wrote Amber will have to earn back the trust of the black community regardless of her apology. Some acknowledge the singer's apology but advised her not to speak again about social issues that she is not fully educated on.
Meanwhile, the former SM Entertainment artist is set to kick off her North America tour, titled X, in January 2020. The American singer earlier announced that she will drop her second mini-album, X, on January 10, 2020.
The album will have six tracks and it was earlier planned to drop a track each month until the official release of the album. However, Amber halted all her activities and pushed back the release of her new music following the death fellow f(x) member Sulli on October 13 in an apparent suicide.
