Nicola Sturgeon sparked fury among royal fans and Tory MSP Murdo Fraser after saying she is in favor of abolishing the monarchy, which Jeremy Corbyn first suggested. The leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) called for a debate over the future of the realm after the disastrous interview of Prince Andrew about his friendship with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The royal family is in the middle of a big controversy due to the issues surrounding the Duke of York. The scandal is now considered as one of the biggest crises Queen Elizabeth II is facing after the death of Princess Diana in 1997.

Hence, there are now calls for a national debate to talk about the monarchy's future. The Leader of the Opposition Jeremy Corbyn led the plea to remove the royal tradition in the United Kingdom. He even suggested that he would create a head of state to replace the Queen.

In an interview with GMTV, via Express, Jeremy Corbyn said that he believed it would be the best time to move on and elect a head of state when Queen Elizabeth completed her reign. Nicola Sturgeon supported the claim, telling ITV News at Ten that they should have a debate over "the role of the monarchy."

When asked if Prince Andrew's scandal had something to do with her suggestion, she said that the issue raised several questions. Nicole Sturgeon continued to say that there should be a debate about the monarchy's future in the long term future.

"One of the things though in the context of Prince Andrew that I feel very strongly about is that a debate about the monarchy shouldn't be a distraction from Epstein's victims," she said. "I think while yes there is a debate to be had about the former, I don't think it should become conflated with that or be used in any way to sort of take attention from that."

Nicola Sturgeon's comments sparked fury among royal fans and Murdo Fraser. He accused the SNP of changing its policy of keeping the monarchy in a "shameless attempt" to attract the republicans' votes. However, an SNP spokesman later confirmed that it would still keep the royal family after the independence.

Royal fans, on the other hand, defended Queen Elizabeth on social media. Some questioned Nicola Sturgeon's right to comment about the U.K. affairs, knowing that she is pursuing independence.

One fan said that she didn't even want to have a connection to the rest of the realm as she wanted to annex Scotland, so her opinion might be of no value. Another one asked why she talked about the monarchy when all she wanted is to be independent of the U.K.
