It looks like the NATO summit this year is quite controversial after the viral videos going around online. After Justin Trudeau and other world leaders' were caught mocking Donald Trump, Queen Elizabeth II seemed to be telling off her only daughter, Princess Anne, in one event. What really happened here?
A video, which is now circulating online, showed Princess Anne being scolded by her mother in front of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and his wife, Melania Trump. While welcoming the U.S. leader and the first lady, the monarch was seen eyeing her daughter and telling her something.
Princess Anne, who was standing off to one side at the time, responded to her mom by widening her arms and shrugging. Online users assumed that Her Majesty was chastising her child for not greeting the Trumps, so the shrug, per Hello Magazine.
However, Laura Elston from the Press Association detailed what really happened on the Twitter thread by The Times journalist Valentine Low. Princess Anne was left standing back because she was not part of the official welcoming party.
At the time Queen Elizabeth looked at her, she asked if there was any politician left to greet. It turned out that Donald Trump was the last NATO leader in the queue that Her Royal Highness, along with Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles, should welcome at the Buckingham Palace's music room.
Hence, Princess Anne raised her hands in the air and shrugged as a sign that there was no one left. "It's just me," she said. She then pointed the other members of the household behind her and added, saying, "and this lot." The Princess Royal then turned to show the Deputy Master of the Household, Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Charles Richards, and Lord Chamberlain Earl Peel, who were both waiting behind her.
So, Low explained that there was no way that Princess Anne snubbed both Donald and Melania Trump and didn't even tell off by the Queen herself, per Daily Mail Online. "This excellent bit of sleuthing comes from the very wonderful Laura Elston of the Press Association, who is as impartial a witness as you could hope for," he added.
Also at the event was Kate Middleton, although, like Princess Anne, she wasn't part of the official line-up. Her husband, Prince William, didn't make it to the NATO summit as he is currently in the Middle East to visit the Gulf Estates of Oman and Kuwait. Prince Harry and Meghan, on the other hand, are enjoying their six-week break from their royal duties.
