Prince William and Kate Middleton were the targets of comedians Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett at this year’s Royal Variety Performance for their jokes. Since their presentations included the couple’s young kids Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, the funny guys were slammed by royal fans.
The popular pre-Christmas TV event was filmed at the end of November but was just aired on Tuesday night on ITV. Romesh Ranganathan and fellow comedian Rob Beckett were co-hosting the show at the London Palladium.
Romesh Ranganathan is a British stand-up comedian and actor, who has his show on the BBC. Rob Becket is an English stand-up comedian and presenter. With that said, these men have a lot of experiences when it comes to comedy. However, their jabs at Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children didn’t please a lot of viewers.
“Like me, you’re blessed with three kids,” Romesh Ranganathan said, aiming at Prince William and Kate Middleton. “I imagine every morning they come running into your bedroom, and you look at their beautiful faces and say, 'I regret this.’”
Prince William and Kate Middleton were seen laughing, showing that they found Ranganathan’s joke funny. Co-host Rob Beckett then added more jokes about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's kids.
“Thank you for coming out tonight. You’re on date night. That's exciting,” he said. “You got the babysitter until midnight or 1 am? It's worth that extra 20 quid."
While Prince William and Kate Middleton appeared to be enjoying the show, viewers were not very happy with the presenters. Many believed that the jokes were not only not funny, but they were tasteless.
“Poor Kate and William for having to sit through one of the poorest Royal Variety Shows I've ever seen. With the exception of a few acts, it's been drivel. I miss stars like Jimmy Tarbuck and Morecambe and Wise....true entertainers and naturally funny!” one shared. “Utterly crap and embarrassing poor Wills and Kate having to endure it all night,” another one commented. One royal fan then said, “Is this meant to be entertaining .... at least we can switch it off - feel sorry for William and Kate!"
Prince William and Kate Middleton have been in these kinds of events for years, so they have certainly learned how not to take things so seriously. But as for their fans, they are not as forgiving as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
