We all know how important sleeping is for one person to live healthier and happier. People who usually embrace good and peaceful rest have lower risks of acquiring illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes as compared to those who don't. Experts say their mood and ability to manage stress have also increased dramatically. All these can help increase production at work and improve self-being too, as reported by the US Department of Health and Human Services.
But, not everything we know about sleeping and its effects is true. Dr. Rebecca Robbins, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, alongside with Dr. David Rapoport, a professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, debunked some of the most common myths about sleeping, everyone must know of in a video posted by Science Insider on their social media platform.
WATCHING TELEVISION CAN HELP INDUCE SLEEP
Though watching a movie or the television can tire your eyes to sleep, Robbins and Rapoport emphasized they really don't recommend such to get a good night sleep. According to the experts, televisions, monitors, or other gadgets produces a very strong blue light, which can cause more harm than good. Aside from causing some serious retinal damage, exposure to blue-light can result in a change in our circadian rhythm or body clock, which regulates the body's sleep-wake cycle.
DRINKING ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES BEFORE SLEEPING CAN BOOST SLEEP
Among all the myths regarding sleep, most people are guilty of believing in this. Because alcoholic beverages are also considered a drug, drinking even just a glass or two can already help get you a good sleep. But unfortunately, Rapoport explains though drinking can help you sleep in the first place, the alcohol content can possibly disrupt the normal sleep, especially when it comes to your REM.
The expert explains that once you drink alcohol, your body tends to skip REM sleep. But as soon the alcohol kicks out of your system, REM sleep comes back oftentimes too strong and at the wrong time causing disruption to your sleep. REM sleep is a phase in your sleep that happens right after you enter your peaceful realm, about 30 to 60 minutes.
Depriving yourself to experience such good and relaxing sleep can lead to problems even to serious ones. Knowing and understanding the facts about sleeping can help you take care of our bodies the right way. So, make sure to keep these things in mind and even share the information with the people you love.
