Legends of Tomorrow season 5 teased that the possible death of Matt Ryan's character John Constantine is almost near. Right now, there are a lot of reasons to be worried about, and his future in the series is uncertain at the moment.

Legends of Tomorrow season 5 is probably bringing back Constantine's famous comic story, wherein he suffered from lung cancer. In the previous episode titled "A Head of Her Time," the secondary story revolved around Constantine.

At the end of the episode, Constantine was coughing up blood as Astra decided to accelerate the time of his eventual death. She got tired of him and made a deal to speed up his death, which is 10 years in the future because of lung cancer.

Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Grainne Godfree discussed this particular matter and why they decided to make this story. He said they wanted to give Constantine one of the most iconic storylines from the comics; wherein he gets lung cancer.

Godfree told the publication the character will try to do everything he can, in the "John Constantine type way," to get out of his situation. Viewers will see Constantine doing whatever he can to fight for his life in Legends of Tomorrow season 5.

However, he's also reluctant to get some help from his friends, so he'll probably deal with all of these alone. Constantine may do something self-destructive since that's what he usually does. He knows how to take on demons and other crazy stuff, but it also triggers personal demons and problems.

Meanwhile, for the writing team, executive producer Phil Klemmer said Constantine's storyline is a balance because they wanted to honor Garth Ennis' Hellblazer story arc Dangerous Habits. But at the same time, they also want to break new ground.

Klemmer hopes they would find the right balance, but also added there's no predicting where they were headed based on the books. The series is not doing a direct adaptation of the comic arc. Instead, they are aiming for a "great launching point."

For now, Constantine's apparent death may not come within a few weeks, but it may likely happen at some point this season. CarterMatt also noted that even though the character does survive, there is still a possibility he would leave the Waverider in the future.

Legends of Tomorrow season 5 arrives every Tuesday on The CW.
