Prince Harry and Meghan Markle officially stepped down as senior royals. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced earlier this year that they would want to leave their roles to focus more on their family and charities.
Now, a one-hour special on VICE TV titled Meghan Markle: Escaping The Crown claims that Prince Harry’s wife was a “huge opportunity” the Royal family has missed. Omid Scobie, a royal editor of Harpers Bazaar US and host of the royal podcast The Heir Pod, appeared on the documentary and shared his thoughts about the Royal Family letting go of the former actress.
"I think historians will look back on this as the biggest missed opportunity the royals have ever had,” he said. "Usually royal wives are given this honeymoon period when they can expect to be treated decently by the press. Every single thing that Meghan did was criticized from day one."
Omid Scobie pointed out that the treatment of Meghan Markle was reminiscent of how Princess Diana was treated when she left the Royal family after her divorce from Prince Charles. He said that they should have done more to support the Duchess of Sussex during her troubled times.
"They should have been defending her when she faced things no royal women had to face before, so that silence spoke volumes,” he said. “Meghan herself spoke out on the difficulty of dealing with press coverage.”
It's no secret that Meghan Markle just couldn’t catch a break from her critics. Ever since she got married to Prince Harry, she has been bombarded with criticisms even over some little things.
During an interview with Tom Bradby for the ITV documentary, the anchor asked Meghan Markle about the impact of public scrutiny on her. The Duchess of Sussex, then, replied, “thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I'm OK. But it's a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”
Although Meghan Markle said some valid points, a lot of netizens were not impressed at all. Instead of receiving some sympathy, she was bashed even more for it.
Also, Queen Elizabeth is known for trying to avoid any sort of controversy as much as possible. That being said, a royal expert shared that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s revelation is something that Her Majesty may not be too pleased of.
