Apple is scheduled to unveil its budget-friendly mobile phone this month although its official name has yet to be decided. Some have referred to it as the iPhone 9 while others the iPhone SE 2. The Cupertino finally put all that to rest when they officially branded it as the 2020 iPhone SE.

According to 9 to 5 Mac, the naming strategy aligns with the company's preference in using years rather than numbers to distinguish its models. It is the same practice that the company has followed for its other product offerings such as the MacBook and the iPad Pro.

Other than settling the official name of the upcoming iPhone, several new information has come out. The 2020 iPhone SE will be available in black, white and red while also having five official cases. Worth noting as well that aside from the 64 and 128 GB configurations, a 256 GB variant will also be available to potential buyers.

The original plans for the 2020 iPhone SE were for it to be launched on Apr. 15. While that could remain, the shipment date could be reset. Apple planned to start shipments by Apr. 22 but the coronavirus pandemic may make it difficult for them to ship them to anywhere in the world right now. Further, it may not be feasible to offer a mobile phone right now even if it were branded as a budget-friendly device. According to Slash Gear, the estimated price for the 2020 iPhone SE could be around $400.

Regardless if it is cheaper compared to the other high-end devices coming from Apple, timing is an essential part of their strategy. With most prioritizing food, medicine, and other essentials, seeing some folks buying a new iPhone at this point may not be feasible. The Cupertino company is already aware of this but for the iPhone 12. Rather than release that model in the fall, it is likely to be moved by a couple of months. The same ploy may be adaptable to the 2020 iPhone SE.

Launching the 2020 iPhone SE would be acceptable at this time with most holed up in their homes and for those who may want to know more about something other than the COVID-19 pandemic. With the right tweaks, Apple could employ a different kind of tactic and market the device incrementally. And when the time is right, the company could start shipments and start taking orders. That point will depend on whether the coronavirus has been contained, allowing folks to get back on their feet and their lives back on track.
