Queen Elizabeth's 94th birthday on Tuesday, April 21, is going to be a muted celebration because of the coronavirus lockdown. However, she will likely still enjoy a special tradition coming from her husband, Prince Philip.
According to Ingrid Seward, the editor of Majesty, Prince Philip always has flowers for Queen Elizabeth for her birthday. Seward believes that despite this coronavirus lockdown, the Duke of Edinburgh has arranged for someone to get the flowers for his beloved wife.
The Queen apparently loves white flowers and has preference for Lily of the Valley. They should be a bouquet waiting for her from her husband even if they skip this year's usual celebrations.
Queen Elizabeth usually has a private celebration with the royal family for her April 21. This year, however, Her Majesty canceled all things related to her birthday, including the gun salutes and the flying of the Union Jack flag, because she doesn't think it's appropriate considering that many people are sick and dying due to COVID-19.
Seward said that the Queen is not the type to fret over missing birthday celebrations. Apparently, the monarch once said that they should only be allowed to celebrate every 10 years since they have so much birthdays and anniversaries in a large family such as the British royals.
While currently isolated in Windsor Castle, Queen Elizabeth might observe her birthday with her immediate staff. There have been less than eight people tending to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh instead of the usual hundreds of staff.
It's the order from the government to limit gatherings of a large number of people to prevent the spread of the virus. The royal family are taking extra measures as well since the Queen and her husband are in the vulnerable sector due to their age and their pre-existing condition.
Meanwhile, the Queen usually enjoys a ride on her horse for her birthday. She might also skip this tradition and stay indoors. Seward said that the Queen is very conscious of her sense of duty and thus will follow the safety measures to protect her health.
The Queen, however, won't be completely without any family members greeting her. Her children and grandchildren have sent their virtual greetings online, while she is also expected to have a Zoom chat with her family.
A source from Buckingham Palace said that the royals will be hosting a Zoom party for Queen Elizabeth. Prince Harry and Meghan, as well as their son, Archie, have also talked to the Queen via video conferencing as they are staying and observing quarantine orders in Los Angeles.
