Royal Family members are usually not allowed to express themselves on social media. However, Prince William and Kate Middleton broke key Royal Family tradition by using these platforms such as Instagram during the coronavirus pandemic.

While this action was traditionally frowned upon by the monarchy, Prince William and Kate Middleton were not “constricted” to use social media during the global health crisis. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been using their online accounts to spread awareness, news, and information regarding the outbreak.

“Historically, the royals have been constricted from expressing themselves personally on social media,” royal expert Leslie Carroll said. “Let’s not forget that Meghan was instructed to shut down her own accounts when she began dating Harry. And all social media has come through official account names, most probably written by communications professionals, rather than by members of the royal family themselves."

The Royal Family has been a huge inspiration to the public, and every little thing that they do has an impact on everyone. So for Prince William and Kate Middleton to be somewhat present through their social media posts is a big deal.

“Even an institution that is more than a millennium old must adapt to the times we live in now,” she continued. “The royal family has been a constant presence in the lives of the public for more than a thousand years. And part of 'keeping calm and carry[ing] on' is the ability to continue to communicate effectively, continually, and in a reassuring manner. “

Just like everyone else in the UK and most parts of the world, the Royal family is also practicing the implemented lockdown. While some people are still confused and worried about what’s going to happen, Queen Elizabeth, Prince William, Kate Middleton, and the rest of the members still deliver “stability to the public,” royal commentator Angela Mollard previously shared.

"While members of the public may be divided on how they should be funded and what role they should play, they're certainly up there as a steadying influence in the UK,” she said. “They're the ones that make everybody feel content and safe. With the Queen obviously at Windsor and Charles up in Scotland, I think William is very much stepping up to take the reins. He was the first of them to speak about coronavirus and to instruct on what to do. And others like Meghan and Harry and Charles and Camilla have followed."
