Epic Games meant well when the mystery free game they were offering did turn out to be "Grand Theft Auto 5." It remains one of the top games to get these days, so it came to no surprise that there were about millions of people who bit the offer. The only problem is that Rockstar Games overlooked the surge in players, not expecting that the spike would have dire consequences on their servers. The aftermath is game servers now conking out, obviously unable to maintain the load of new players playing "GTA V."

Rockstar Games announced on Twitter that due to the high player volumes, gamers should expect issues trying to play the game. Some may have trouble accessing the Rockstar Games Launcher and the "GTA V" for PC. They are trying to address the issue, but it appears they need to do more than that moving forward. Epic Games is offering the game for free until May 21, meaning more hiccups are to be expected in the coming days.

Ironically but unsurprising, Rockstar Game servers were not the only ones who suffered outages. The Epic Games site is also experiencing issues with plenty of players signing up and getting hold of the free game. Between the two, the Epic Games servers may not be suffering the same heavy load. But such spells bad news for people planning to get a copy of "GTA V."

Some have been trying to sign in and take up Epic Games on the offer. The process is simple. All one has to do is sign up for free. The Epic Games software will also be needed to get hold of the game. Once all that is done, all a subscriber needs to do is add "Grand Theft Auto 5" to their game library, and it will be theirs forever.

The last update provided by Rockstar Games is that the issue has been resolved. However, folks may want to taper down expectations with the surge of new players likely to continue its spike upwards. With most holed up at home, playing video games is a recourse most are taking. It may take time before the "GTA" servers go back to normal - likely after May 21 when the free offer from Epic Games expires.

"Grand Theft Auto 5" remains one of the top games to get with most waiting for "GTA 6." The latest on the next installment in that the storyline is already done. But as far as a release date is concerned, "Grand Theft Auto 6" remains (still) in development.
