Despite the scandal that Princess Diana and Prince Charles made when they decided to part ways, the Princess of Wales, reportedly, didn't want to end her marriage. The mother-of-two had a better idea to end her romance with the future King then, instead of opting for divorce.

Royal expert Jennie Bond revealed Princess Diana made a confession to her when her closest confidante, Patrick Jephson, resigned. Her private secretary left his job after she gave the bombshell 1995 Panorama interview with Martin Bashir, Daily Mail reported.

In the new Channel 5 documentary, Princess Diana, In Her Own Words, the former BBC news royal correspondent revealed the late People's Princess wanted to stay married to the Prince of Wales despite their separation. She fancied continuing their work together and performing their royal duties as "separated partners."

Despite their breakup, she still believed that they made a strong team. Her former aides added that although she was not "academically gifted," they couldn't deny that she was "incredibly smart."

Bond said Princes William and Harry's mother told her that she didn't want the divorce. She was quite convinced that they could continue working together, albeit their separation by being partners and parents to their boys.

Before things got worse, Princess Diana tried her best to make it work. So when the day of divorce came, it was extremely hard for her.

Although she put a brave face going out and public, she was hurting inside. She, allegedly, told Bond that it was an "extremely difficult" thing for her. So, she went home and cried.

According to Express, Princess Diana said in 1997 that she hoped her marriage lasted. She believed they would have been the best team in the world. She could continue shaking people's hands, while her then-husband would be making speeches, but it never happened.

The veteran journalist also added that Princess Diana would usually share personal things with her, but it had to be off the record. She was happy to talk about private matters, but she would later ask her to make it just be between the two of them and the four walls where they spoke.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles tied the knot with a lavish royal wedding in 1981. They initially separated in 1992 and were divorced in 1996.

At the time, there were consecutive divorces in the Royal Family. Princess Anne was divorced from Mark Phillips in 1992, while Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson also got separated in 1996. In 2005, Princess Charles got married again to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
