Elon Musk did not disappoint -- he really did release Tesla Short Shorts and even joked that he owns a couple of XL-sized ones. It may all seem fun and games for the eclectic CEO, but we may closer to seeing Teslaquila: the electric automaker's own brand of spirit.

On Sunday, Tesla launched limited-edition short shorts costing "$69.420," which is literally red satin hot pants with the word "S3XY" emblazoned across the back. Musk appeared to be taking a jab at short-sellers and investors who bet against the company.

Amidst the announcement, Musk took the time to answer a fan page asking an update about the Teslaquila:

Musk, who is perhaps the most successful troll of this generation, has had Teslaquila in the pipeline since 2018. Two years back, he posted a photo of him passing out after downing bottles of "Teslaquila." Naturally, eager fans didn't take long to ask him if a real alcoholic beverage with the same name would be produced.

Not surprisingly, Musk didn't back out from the idea and eventually filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a distilled spirit branded as "Teslaquila." But things don't always work out, even for the famous innovator.

Tesla's application was rejected because there was already an alcoholic beverage with a name that can be easily confused with Teslaquila, which is called Spirit Tesla. It's owned by Serbian brewing company Valjevsko and has Nikola Tesla's face plastered onto the bottle.

On Musk's word, Tesla's legal team fought for the patent, arguing that Spirit Tesla and Teslaquila are hardly similar names since the former is obviously related to the genius Nikola Tesla and the latter an immediately recognizable drink from the electric automaker. Moreover, Spirit Tesla is a Slivovitz or plum brandy, and Teslaquila is a distilled agave liquor.

Since a Teslaquila bottle is nowhere to be seen, Musk's quest for his own brand of spirit has been derailed, obviously, but not for long -- at least according to Musk's tweet. There's hope for those keen on downing the alcoholic drink.

Take a look at the Telsa Short Shorts for example, which was announced in 2018 as well, merely months after Musk introduced the Teslaquila to the world. We're not keeping your hopes up, but anything is possible, especially for a man who owns Tesla and SpaceX.

For now, we'll be watching Elon on Twitter and hope he tweets a picture of a bottle soon.
