The Rookie season 3 is eventually coming on ABC, though the official release date is uncertain as of this writing. Production hasn't yet started and there's no indication it would happen anytime soon. Despite the delays, series forefront Nathan Fillion wants someone to guest star in the new season.
During the Comic-Con @ Home, Fillion reflects on his career and talks about his past projects, including Firefly and Castle. He discussed working with his previous co-stars and revealed who he wanted to appear at some point in The Rookie season 3.
Firefly co-stars Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, and Joss Whedon joined the conversation, as well as Castle's Jon Huertas, Seamus Dever, and Molly Quinn. Fillion loves his co-stars and lets many of them appeared on his other shows. For instance, Tudyk, Huertas, and Dever all guest-starred in The Rookie.
Torres, on the other hand, made an appearance in Castle. Now, Fillion wants her to guest star in The Rookie season 3. The actress agreed to his request, but she asked him to be there if ever she'll appear because that didn't happen when she appeared in Castle.
Showrunner Alexi Hawley, also, has something to say about the subject. He told Torres that there's no way he would put her on the series and not write her in Fillion's story. While nothing is confirmed, there is a possibility the actress could appear at some point in the series.
Meanwhile, the second installment ended with a huge cliffhanger involving John Nolan and Harold Perrineau's Armstrong. The latter was proved to be dirty and he framed Fillion's character for the crime he didn't commit. This storyline may continue once The Rookie season 3 premieres.
However, there's also a question as to whether or not Perrineau is returning in the upcoming installment. Speaking to TV Insider, the actor said he is holding a pattern and he has no idea if he'll be returning in the series. One of the major factors to be considered is the filming schedules.
Perrineau is a series regular on TNT's Claws, which hasn't finished production of the final season. If there is no health crisis, CarterMatt noted the actor would be able to do both shows without any scheduling difficulty. Due to the current situation, both schedules could conflict leading to creative challenges.
As for what else is coming, The Rookie season 3 will also explore the real-life events happening in the police world. ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke told Deadline they'll be taking on this particular matter and a discussion in the writers' room in underway.
