Even with coronavirus this year's World Internet of Things Exposition is expected to be one of the most successful expos of its kind in 2020. The event, hosted by Wuxi in China's Jiangsu province, officially kicked off Friday.

Unlike in previous years 2020 WIOT will run for three months through October. The launch Conference on IoT and 5G Integrated Innovations and Development was well attended.

This year's theme is "Empowering the world with IoT, engaging the future of 5G." It will emphasize China's drive to adopt newer technologies based on 5G network integrations for manufacturing and industrial purposes. Over the next three months organizers will hold exhibitions, forums, promotions and events that will concentrate on the collaborative applications of 5G network technologies and Internet of Things devices.

Heads of top IoT companies from China attended the launch including Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre president Luc Van Den Hove. The founder of the European IoT Council, Rob Van Kranenburg, traveled to China to attend the kickoff. Foreign delegates spoke about the integration of 5G and IoT and its benefits for enhancing industry.

Organizers launched the IoT Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. The 2019-2020 Annual Report on the Development of IoT in China was published, too. Large China telecommunications companies such as China Mobile and China Telecom used the event to introduce their new 5G offerings.

Wuxi, on the banks of Taihu Lake, has been host since 2016 - earning it the designation of China's IoT City. WIOT is the country's largest IoT technologies event, attracting thousands of businesses from across the world. In 2019 the expo attracted more than 195,000 visitors. More than 542 companies from 30 different countries participated. These included 37 Fortune 500 companies intent on forging new local partnerships.
