Prince William has a new girl in sight and he's very into her. But, Kate Middleton doesn't have to be threatened because Tara is but a harmless, beautiful Irish Setter.

The Duke of Cambridge met Tara for the first time at a royal engagement in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Wednesday, Sept 10. William's eyes lit up and he had a huge smile on his face when he saw the five-month-old pup.

The royal couldn't not help himself so he crouched on the floor to pet the dog. Tara, who is getting training as a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) service dog, comfortably sat down as Prince William stroke her fur.

The Duke of Cambridge and Tara made eye contact while an officer held the dog by the collar. He still had a smile on his face as Tara's training officer led her out of the room as Prince William made his way to the Belfast Police College to thank the police officers for their service.

The royal told the coppers in training that this has been indeed an "extraordinary year." He said that what lies ahead is still uncertain and scary but the sacrifices these men and women make, along with the NHS and the emergency services, make him feel fortunate to be in the U.K.

Prince William told the officers that their sacrifices are definitely recognized and they have the support of the public. He emphasized on the importance of mental health among first responders and said that he's "encouraged and heartened" that there are programs geared for specifically this purpose in Northern Ireland.

The surprise trip to Belfast marks Prince William's return to his royal duties this fall. It's also his first trip over water since the coronavirus lockdown in March.  The Belfast visit also kicks off his first engagement since returning to London after months of staying in Norfolk with Kate Middleton and their children.

Prince William and Kate returned to their official residence at Kensington Palace as the royal family is reportedly keen on returning to business. However, all the royal houses will still abide by government advice on COVID-19 safety and precautions.

It comes as Queen Elizabeth is also expected to make stops at Buckingham Palace for selected royal engagements. However, Her Majesty will mostly be based in Windsor Castle to limit her exposure and risks while relegating some of the duties to Prince Charles and Camilla, as well as Prince William and Kate.
