An anti-monarchy group is calling on Queen Elizabeth to give up her role as head of state because she is a powerless monarch.

The group called the Republic, through its CEO Graham Smith, has been campaigning for the monarchy's abolishment and replacement of Queen Elizabeth. Instead of the Queen, the Republic wants an elected head of state.

In a statement on Daily Express, Smith said that Queen Elizabeth made it clear that she will heed to whatever the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom tells her when it came to matters of the state. Apparently, the Republic finds this problematic because this means that the Queen will never intervene in government matters even if she knows that the leaders could be wrong.

Smith said that heads of state must be able to say what their officials cannot do, especially in making policies. They safeguard the constitution from abuse, which in turn protects the people.

But the Queen is not accountable as the current head of state if the government makes mistakes since she does not intervene or step in to help decide on crucial matters. Queen Elizabeth and the royal family have always upheld neutrality, especially in political matters.

The anti-monarchist said that Queen Elizabeth made this stance clearer in the last Parliament with Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The Republic's CEO accused the Queen of being powerless because it would affect her popularity and her position, especially with Johnson's supporters. If she's no longer popular then it could spell the end of the royal family.

The Republic's other worry is that the rest of the royal family would be following in the lead of the Queen until the government announces that they have failed the people.

Smith also released another statement criticizing the royal family for not having their own homes. The British taxpayers apparently pay for the security of over 20 royal residences and he said that this practice must end.

The Republic head said that the people of Britain do not owe Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward any houses. The Queen's children apparently have their own money to buy properties but they continue to enjoy the luxuries as shouldered by the taxpayers.

Smith has been leading the campaign to abolish the monarchy for decades. In 2010, he wrote a piece on The Guardian and said that the royal family has "no purpose for the people."
