Some fans have been hoping for The 100 season 8 despite the events that happened in the seventh installment. However, it seems like the series will not proceed to deliver more episodes as the show already reached the series finale.
The 100 season 8 is unlikely to happen since it has been long confirmed that the now-concluded season 7 is the ending. During the 2019 Television Critics Association, The CW President Mark Pedowitz said that showrunner Jason Rothenberg wanted to end the series after the seventh installment.
Also, the series ended with a total of 100 episodes, which is fitted for the story. Moreover, the final installment wrapped up most of the storylines, leaving no room to explore in The 100 season 8. All of the characters reached their final journey, giving a proper ending.
But, even though we won't be getting The 100 season 8, the good news is that there's a possibility of a prequel series moving forward. In fact, it had a backdoor pilot in season 7, titled "Anaconda." The episode featured a flashback story, taking place 97 years before the events in season 1.
The story follows Bill Cadogan (John Pyper-Ferguson), the Second Dawn's founder, who escaped to his bunker with his family. The episode also revealed the origins of the Grounders and the story behind Becca Franko's (Erica Cerra) death.
The prequel series will follow the events that happened in "Anaconda." Bill's daughter Callie (Iola Evans) left the bunker with the Flame, as well as 2,000 samples of Nightbloods. It is believed that the show is led by Callie this time around.
Reportedly, the prequel is titled The 100: Second Dawn, taking place two years after the apocalypse. Back in July, Rothenberg told TVLine that the story is more tethered to reality. It sees people living through the problems of the world.
The showrunner added that he wanted to make Lost-style flashback episodes to pre-apocalypse times. That means we're going to see most scenes being shot in homes, bars, and restaurants -- not in the middle of woods all the time.
In the prequel series, Callie will try to save the human race while his brother Reese (Adain Bradley) chases after her. The setup has been established, along with the main players. Now, the remaining hurdle is whether or not The CW will give it a go.
Rothenberg previously said that the network hasn't made any decisions as of yet. But, the project is still being actively discussed. A lot of The CW's shows are ending, including Supergirl and Supernatural. Now that The 100 season 8 won't happen, they may decide to proceed with the prequel series.
