Tesla started the phased delivery of the latest Full Self-Driving software update on Tuesday but already Elon Musk is giving a projection that the beta rollout will transition into a wide release before the end of 2020. The ongoing OS bump is cautious and slow but the CEO promised full-scale Autopilot features over the coming months.

It is understood that only a select segment of Tesla vehicle owners has received the update that Musk labeled as FSD Beta, and these drivers are part of the company's early access program. It's not clear how the early recipients have been picked but they are thought to be "expert and careful drivers."

Tesla did not specify the feature upgrades packed with the beta release but Electrek is assuming that one of the updates focused on traffic signs and traffic lights. If true, the FSD Beta is deemed more accurate than ever in navigating through major and secondary roads, and with little or no inputs coming from drivers.

This being case, Tesla is clear that using the FSD Beta still requires drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel and be ready to take over in case of a software glitch. The advisory indicates that Tesla's Autopilot is far from the perfect form that Musk committed he would eventually deliver.

The company has been saying that FSD and Autopilot will gain big feature bumps in the aftermath of a foundational rewrite. The goal is to make all Tesla vehicles intelligently deal with a 4D environment but the FSD Beta is not yet on this stage.

The end of 2020 timeline for the fully functional FSD's arrival is in line with Musk's vow of getting out Tesla's Autopilot, which promises zero-intervention, slowly but surely.

"[We'll] release it to more people this weekend or early next week. Then gradually step it up until we hopefully have a wide-release by the end of this year," Teslarati reported Musk as saying.

The FSD is thought to make use of Tesla's Neural Network to achieve better accuracy in the months to come. As Musk himself indicated, with more users gaining access to the program and more data absorbed by the Tesla server, both Autopilot and FSD will gain robustness and to the benefit of drivers.

The full deployment of FSD is believed connected directly to Tesla's ambitious program - the eventual introduction of the Robotaxi fleet. The company has constantly reminded that Robotaxi will make the ownership of Tesla vehicles a wise investment.

The Robotaxi fleet, which will be Tesla's ride-hailing service, will be dependent on how Musk's vision of FSD will play out and the executive seemed optimistic that his targets are realistic and could start unfolding in 2021.
