It has been more than three years since fans last saw Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) on the small screen. As fans are ardently waiting for their return, will Sherlock Season 5 still come to fruition?

BBC has yet to order new episodes of Sherlock Season 5, so its future remains unknown. Some believe the show may never be renewed, especially with the way the fourth season ended.

There are a few loose ends that the series has to tie on for at least one more season. However, CBR noted that the show didn't leave major cliffhangers after Sherlock and Watson returned to their old life on Baker Street.

There are also no significant enemies left that the two have to face, which seems to be a big departure from its usual season finale. Watson and Sherlock's final shot at running off from fighting more crime appears to be an epilogue more than an opening of a new chapter.

However, according to Devdiscourse, there is still a big possibility that Sherlock Season 5 will make its way back to the small screens. Its creator, Steven Moffat, revealed it is unlikely for the show to be officially canceled.

Mark Gatiss said the same thing in an earlier interview, while Cumberbatch even said that no one had closed its door yet on the show. Freeman added that the only thing that stopped them from doing Sherlock Season 5 is they are all busy. They also don't want to risk the show's legacy by producing a "subpar season," by not putting their sole attention to it.

In addition, in the show's tenth anniversary, Gatiss revealed they wanted to adapt the Red-Headed League story, plus Jim Moriarty's (Andrew Scott) plot to rob a bank. A new villain may also be introduced with Dr. Grimesby Roylott.

Gatiss continued there are a lot of appealing stories that the show has yet to reveal. Does this mean they are about to explore these storylines in Sherlock Season 5? Moffat simply said they should remain quiet on the plotlines that they are interested in doing.

Fans went crazy when the BBC chose Cumberbatch to play the role of Sherlock Holmes, which was believed to be one of the actor's best roles in his entire career. In no time, the show earned a strong following, receiving a lot of positive responses.

However, it looks like the show has been "stalled without warning," per Screenrant. Anyhow, there are still talks for a possible Sherlock Season 5, although nothing has been confirmed yet.
