It looks like The Winds of Winter will soon see the light of the day after George R.R. Martin updates fans of his progress. The 72-year-old author reveals his writing process and explains what takes him so long to finish, resulting in a delay.

Martin revealed he had been continuously working on The Winds of Winter every day, but the constant editing and rewriting process take a lot of time. In his blog post, titled Back to Westeros, via BlockToro, the novelist dropped some key points, explaining why the sixth book installment is not yet out.

The screenwriter assured fans he is continually working on the novel but apologized that it isn't done yet. However, he teased he is inching closer to its ending, which means it may be out soon.

Martin continued that what he is writing is a "big, big book" and even admitted that he is trying "not to dwell" on it that much. So, he writes one chapter, page, sentence, and word at a time. It is the only way for him to continue, and sometimes he even rewrites.

The TV producer continued revising old passages, including the old excerpts that he revealed before at cons and online. He constantly tweaks stories, moves things around, combines and breaks chapters, and reorders stories.

Despite too many works, Martin divulged it is how the first five books were also written. Another reason for the Winds of Winter delay is that he fell ill from August to early September. However, everything is good now and working continuously.

In fact, according to Winter is Coming, Martin has been writing a lot about Cersei and Tyrion lately. He also visited the story of Dorne and Oldtown a couple of times.

So, an A Song of Ice and Fire expert, Brynden B Fish, believed Martin's progress in writing the fifth book, A Dance with Dragons, is a "reliable benchmark" for how fast he is writing The Winds of Winter, despite the delay.

He said when Martin inched closer to finishing A Dance with Dragons, he started to write fast, per Express. He, reportedly, managed to write more than seven hundred manuscript pages from January 2010 to April 2011.

Anyhow, when The Winds of Winter indeed comes out in 2021, he may not start writing the final book, A Dream of Spring, yet. He may begin the fourth Dunk, and Egg short story and then write the finale.
