Wonder Woman 1984 is still enjoying a successful theatrical run but it looks like Warner Bros. already has plans for the future. The studio has confirmed that Wonder Woman 3 is already in development and Gal Gadot is set to return as Diana Prince. In addition to that, director Patty Jenkins will helm the third movie.

There is little doubt that Wonder Woman 1984 is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year for many reasons. In addition to being the follow-up to the 2017 DC Extended Universe flick, the sequel has been delayed several times since last year. With that in mind, it was no surprise that the movie became the most successful box office hit during the COVID-19 era despite being released only in selected theaters as well as on HBO Max for free.

Not surprisingly, Warner Bros. is eager to make the best out of the Wonder Woman 1984 success. On Sunday, Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich shared a statement with Variety confirming Wonder Woman 3 is already being developed.

"As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984, we are excited to be able to continue her story with our real life Wonder Women - Gal and Patty - who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy," Emmerich said in the statement.

Fans were understandably delighted with the news but no one is surprised at all. After all, Gal Gadot has previously teased on what could happen in Wonder Woman 3 even when the sequel was not yet confirmed.

Gal Gadot previously spoke to MTV News while promoting Wonder Woman 1984 and she was asked what could happen in a possible sequel. Although the Justice League actress did not confirm Wonder Woman 3 just yet, she pointed out that the next movie will not be taking place in the past.

"I wouldn't go, like, to the '60s or to the '40s with Wonder Woman," Gadot said. "I feel like the past has been handled well, and now it's time to move on."

This is welcome news considering that the first two movies have already revealed a lot about Diana Prince's past. In addition to that, fans are eager to find out what is happening to the present-day Diana now that she has joined the Justice League with Batman, Superman, The Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman.

Wonder Woman 3 has not yet been given an official release date. In the meantime, Wonder Woman 1984 is screening in selected theaters as well as on HBO Max.
