A sixth-grade girl opened fire at a school in eastern Idaho - shooting two classmates and a teacher, Reuters reported Friday.

The girl pulled a handgun from her backpack and began firing about 9 a.m. Thursday, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said.

A female teacher at Rigby Middle School in Rigby, Idaho, disarmed the girl and detained her until police arrived, Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson said.

Authorities didn't immediately release the girl's name and age. The FBI and local police are investigating the shooting.

"This is the worst nightmare a school district could ever face," ABC News quoted Superintendent Chad Martin as saying. "We prepare for it, but we're never truly ready for it."

Lucy Long, a sixthgrader at the school, said she heard pounding on her classroom door and then two gunshots, followed by screams. There was a third gunshot, she said.

"I was really scared...I almost started crying, but I was trying to help my other friends," Long told Idaho Falls ABC affiliate KIFI.

Jefferson County prosecuting lawyer Mark Taylor said charges against the girl could include three counts of attempted murder, depending on the outcome of the investigation.

According to Michael Lemon, trauma director at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, none of the gunshot wounds were life-threatening.

The U.S. has suffered a series of mass shootings in recent weeks, including at a FedEx warehouse in Indianapolis, an office building in California, a grocery store in Colorado and at multiple spas in Atlanta, NDTV said.
