After confirming a new Dragon Ball Super movie is coming, fans are now wondering about the new film's timeline. Some say it will follow the 2018 Dragon Ball Super: Broly's story, while others believe it will be after the current manga's arc, Granolah Arc.
As no one knows when the new Dragon Ball Super movie is set, will it be part of the canon? The mega-successful franchise creator Akira Toriyama confirms it will be part of the franchise's story, so it may only be a matter of time before he reveals its timeline.
According to Comicbook, the most probable theory on when the second film will occur is after Broly. Toei Animation confirms it has been working on the movie even before the first film was out in 2018.
So, it gives birth to theories that the two films are "planned out in tandem," just like how Battle of Gods led to Resurrection F. However, it does not necessarily mean that it will tell the events after the first film.
What may happen is it may feature the "core ideas' evolution," such as how Beerus and Whis become an ally. However, if the new Dragon Ball Super movie indeed follows this story, Goku and Vegeta are yet to receive their power upgrades at this time.
The two Saiyans have only furthered their abilities in the Galactic Patrol Prisoner and Granolah the Survivor arc. Though it is exciting to see their godly powers in the anime form, it may not happen in the movie yet, as fans who do not read the manga may get lost in the story.
But if it does, the movie may give birth to a new anime series. Meanwhile, aside from the film's timeline, fans are also waiting to see who among the series' protagonists will make it to the movie or if it will introduce a new one.
The Courier noted it might feature Goku's second brother, Thales, who faced the protagonist and his henchmen in the movie Le Combat Fratricide. However, Goku has already come a long way after his battle with his sibling, so it may introduce a new enemy, who Toriyama seems to hint at in his recent interview before.
Toei Animation announced the new Dragon Ball Super movie on Goku Day last May 9, per Polygon. The film is set to be out in 2022, though important details about it remain under wraps.
It will be part of the Dragon Ball Super timeline, which proves it will be connected to the Dragon Ball Z sequel series.
