Actor Lisa Banes has been killed in a tragic hit-and-run.

The "Gone Girl" star died earlier this week after suffering serious head injuries after being in a collision with an electric scooter. She was 65.

According to TMZ, Banes was in hospital for more than a week and treated for traumatic head injuries. She remained in a critical condition until her death. Manager David Williams said she was "unable to recover."

The actor was crossing a street on the Upper West Side in New York June 4 when she and a scooter collided. Witnesses said she had "the right of way" and the rider ran a red light. The rider didn't stop at the scene.

The rider's identity isn't known, However, the scooter has been described by witnesses as red and black. NBC said the driver didn't stop after the accident. Police haven't made an arrest.

The accident occurred close to a hospital and Banes was quickly taken there.

"We are heartsick over Lisa's tragic and senseless passing," Williams says. "She was a woman of great spirit, kindness and generosity and dedicated to her work, whether onstage or in front of a camera. And even more so to her spouse, family and friends. We were blessed to have had her in our lives."

Williams told CNN he believed Banes was on her way to The Juilliard School where she studied earlier in her career. She also had an appointment at the Lincoln Center Theater.

Banes is survived by her spouse Kathryn Kranhold.

Banes started acting in the 1980s - working with Tom Cruise in the 1988 movie "Cocktail." She was best known for her role as prickly mother Marybeth Elliott in the 2014 film "Gone Girl."

She also made her way on the small screen - appearing on "Royal Pains," "Masters of Sex" and "Nashville. Her most recent project was the TV series "Them."

Banes also made a name in the theater - performing in "High Society," "Arcadia" and "Rumors." She won a Theater World Award for her role in "Look Back in Anger."
