All eyes are now on "Demon Slayer" Season 2 after the mega-success of "Demon Slayer: Mugen Train." As the film has set up the second season's story, do fans have to watch the movie or have a refresher arc?
"Demon Slayer" Season 2 will adapt the manga's Entertainment District arc, the next storyline after "Mugen Train." So, fans who haven't watched the film yet and plan to do so may need to see the movie first before watching the second season to avoid being spoiled.
Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu received their first major assignments as the Demon Slayer Corps members in the Season 1 finale. They were with Rengoku, a Hashira member and an elite Demon Slayer swordsman.
The group performed their mission in the movie, where they took down the Lower One of the Twelve Moons, the organization led by Muzan Kibutsuji, who killed Tanjiro's family. After this, the Demon Slayer Corps and the Hashira had to deal with film's fallout and the coming of the new villains in "Demon Slayer" Season 2, Epic Stream noted.
In the new season trailer, Tanjiro and his group make their way to Yoshiwara, an entertainment district located in Tokyo, Japan, known for its "bright lights and dark desires." They will be with Tengen Uzui, the Sound Hashira, so there is a big possibility that they may face someone from the Upper Moon.
So, does this mean fans need to see a refresher arc to catch up with the story? According to Comicbook, there are rumors there will be a recap arc in the second season, showing the events before the Entertainment District arc begins.
It is not yet confirmed if there will be a recap arc covering the same ground that the film featured. But, if this happens, it may work for some, knowing that not everyone may have seen the movie despite "Mugen Train" success.
So, a quick recap arc may be a good idea if it will not be that long. Though the recap arc seems to suggest an entire twelve-episode run, it is not necessary at all. By the looks of it, for fans who want to have a full grasp and enjoy the new season, they have to watch the film and the first season as well.
Meanwhile, there are no words yet when Demon Slayer Season 2 will exactly be out, though it is said to be released in 2021. However, Yahoo! Japan noted it might drop in October as part of the Fall 2021 anime season.
