Aaron Lowe, the football athlete from University of Utah, was killed at a house party in Sugar House Sunday morning, the Salt Lake City Police Department said.

Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown confirmed that Lowe, 21, died at the scene after an unidentified gunman shot him.

Police officers said they responded to an emergency call about a fight breaking out at a house party shortly after midnight. Two individuals were shot.

Officers found Lowe and a second person who had been shot, and they immediately performed first aid to both victims.

Emergency medical personnel transported the second person, an adult woman, to a local hospital in critical condition. Authorities have not disclosed her name or age.

Utah sophomore cornerback Lowe's death occurs less than a year after teammate Ty Jordan, 19, was killed in an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Lowe was killed a few hours after the Utes beat Washington State, 24-13. Police are hunting down the suspect.

"We're saddened by the loss of Aaron Lowe. He was a leader on our football team, a terrific young man, and a rock of courage," Utah athletic director Mark Harland said in a statement.

Lowe and Jordan were high school teammates in Mesquite, Texas. Lowe switched his jersey from No. 2 to 22 to honor his friend following his death in December last year.

In August this year, Lowe was honored as the first recipient of the Ty Jordan Memorial Scholarship.

In a statement, Brown said he was devastated by the death of Lowe. "This talented young man touched the lives of so many here in Salt Lake City and in Texas," he said.

"The Salt Lake City Police Department grieves with and offers its condolences to the Lowe family and the University of Utah community," Brown said in quotes by The Salt Lake Tribute.

Police say several individuals who were at the party may have witnessed the shooting but left the area before police arrived.

Authorities hope some of those people have taken photos or videos that could help solve them solve the case.
