The IRS has announced that around 2% of eligible households missed their payment due to a technical issue. According to the agency, it has been working to resolve the issue and issue the pending payments.

How to Find Out What Happened to Your Child Tax Credit Check

From now until December, recurring monthly payments will be transferred into your bank account on the 15th of each month. The Child Tax Credit Update Portal, according to the IRS, allows you to examine your processed monthly payment history. Keeping track of any pending payments that haven't been completed through your bank account is a smart idea.

Check the Processed Payments section of the Update Portal for more information if you haven't received the money yet. Double-check your address and financial information if the money was delivered, especially if you've recently relocated or switched banks.

To check on your payments online, you'll need to log in with your IRS username and ID.me account credentials. For first-time users, a photo ID is necessary (it's one of the ways the IRS protects your information from identity theft).

We're not sure if the site will display other payment details like banking information, the amount, the check's processing date, or what's causing the payment to be delayed.

Look for the CHILDCTC deposit in your bank account as you're browsing through it. Because it won't have any processing information if your bank hasn't received the IRS deposit, it won't be able to locate your check. If you feel there is an issue, use the Update Portal to double-check the bank details the IRS has on file, such as your account information and routing numbers.

When to File a Payment Trace for a Missing Check

The IRS also offers a payment trace service to assist you in tracking down payments, including funds from unclaimed stimulus checks. You can request a trace by mailing or faxing Form 3911 (PDF) to the IRS, which is an inquiry into the whereabouts of your IRS funds.

Even if the IRS says you're not eligible for advance payments, submitting a payment trail is a smart practice in case the site goes down.

Your payment will be traceable if it has been at least five days since the deposit date and the bank has not received the funds, four weeks since the check was mailed, or six weeks if it was mailed to a forwarding address listed by USPS. If the check was mailed to a foreign address, you have nine weeks to request a payment trace.
