Among the many official duties that come with being a royal, certain events are etched into their calendars as annual traditions. One such occasion is Garter Day, which is celebrated this year on June 19 at Windsor Castle. This marks the first occurrence of the event since Queen Elizabeth II's passing.

During the 2019 Garter Day festivities, the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, was observed issuing a discreet cue to the Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine, who was engrossed in a conversation with another attendee.

In the captured footage, Kate and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands appear to be so absorbed in their discussion that they nearly overlook a significant segment of the parade procession.

Fortunately, Camilla was ready to provide a gentle arm tap to Maxima, signaling for them to turn their attention to the passing parade. Simultaneously, Sophie Wessex hastily moved to stand next to Letizia in the formation.

The Order of the Garter, the UK's oldest and highest Order of Chivalry, was instituted by Edward III in 1348 as a recognition of notable contributions to public service. Despite its origins over seven centuries ago, the Order has evolved from being strictly aristocratic to include individuals from various walks of life, acknowledged for their service to the public.

In its current form, the Order consists of the King, who serves as the Sovereign of the Garter, numerous high-ranking members of the Royal Family, and twenty-four knights selected in honor of their professional achievements.

The privilege of appointing the Knights of the Garter falls exclusively to the Sovereign. The Order is bestowed upon individuals who have either held a public office, made significant contributions to national life, or rendered personal service to the Sovereign.

The illustrious list of appointees includes the Marshal of the RAF, Lord Stirrup, and former Prime Ministers Sir John Major and Sir Winston Churchill.

St. George, celebrated on April 23rd, is the Order's patron saint. Traditionally, when there are vacancies within the Order, the new appointments are announced on St. George's Day.
