In a recent podcast episode, Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, offered a glimpse into the world of royal etiquette, sharing her strategies for navigating social events and conversations. The Duchess, who was married to Prince Andrew from 1986 to 1996, has attended numerous royal events, acquiring a wealth of experience in royal protocol.

During the episode of "Tea Talks with the Duchess and Sarah," Ferguson discussed the art of exiting a conversation or leaving a party early without causing offense. She emphasized the importance of cultural awareness, as different countries have different social norms. In a British setting, for instance, she suggested a polite excuse to leave a conversation, such as needing to deliver a message to another guest.

The Duchess also shared a strategy for avoiding tricky questions. Instead of answering directly, she suggested redirecting the question to another person, thereby shifting the focus of the conversation.

For those with a busy social calendar, Ferguson offered a unique solution. She recalled advice from an Italian acquaintance who suggested making a loud and noticeable entrance at a party, then leaving after a few minutes. This way, other guests would remember your presence, even if you weren't there for long.

Ferguson stressed the importance of politeness, a value she has instilled in her daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. "I always say to my girls, when you're out on the public stage, smile. If you don't want to be polite, don't go out on the public stage - because no one wants to see a grumpy princess," she said.

In addition to teaching her daughters about manners, Ferguson also helped Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, with her first curtsy to the late Queen Elizabeth II. This was revealed in the "Harry & Meghan" Netflix docuseries released in December 2022.

Ferguson's podcast, "Tea Talks," has become a platform for her to share personal experiences and insights. In a previous episode, she opened up about her breast cancer diagnosis and her decision to undergo a single mastectomy. She is currently recuperating at Royal Lodge, the home she shares with Prince Andrew.
