The group NewJeans (Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, Hyein) concluded their official promotions for their second mini-album "Get Up" by securing the top spot on SBS's "Inkigayo" on August 27.
On the morning of the 28th, through their agency ADOR, NewJeans shared, "This album was a result of deep contemplation and effort, both as a group and individually. Achieving more than expected and receiving so much love made this promotion truly fulfilling and joyful."
They added, "With all the songs we've released so far, it felt like experiencing a festival. We deeply love and thank our fans, the 'Bernies', for always being with us."
◆ Historic Billboard Achievements Within a Year of Debut
NewJeans made K-pop history with "Get Up", establishing themselves as a global sensation. They achieved the top spot on the U.S. "Billboard 200" in the shortest time post-debut among K-pop groups. Their triple title tracks "Super Shy", "ETA", and "Cool With You" simultaneously entered the "Hot 100". NewJeans is the first K-pop girl group to have three songs debut on the Billboard main song chart at the same time. "Super Shy" peaked at #48 on the "Hot 100", staying for six consecutive weeks, while "Get Up" has been on the "Billboard 200" for four straight weeks.
Internationally, "Get Up" entered the UK Official Album Chart at #15, staying for three weeks. "Super Shy" peaked at #52 on the "Singles Top 100" and remains on the chart for its seventh week, solidifying its position in the mainstream pop market.
Domestically, their success is unparalleled. They dominated major music sites like Melon, Genie, and Bugs for six consecutive weeks. "Get Up" sold 1.65 million copies in its first week, quickly rising to the second-highest first-week sales for a K-pop female artist. Currently, with approximately 1.9 million copies sold, the album is on the brink of achieving double million-seller status.
◆ The Global "NewJeans Syndrome"
The global expansion of the "New Jeans Syndrome" was evident on August 3rd at the U.S. "Lollapalooza" and on August 19 at Japan's "Summer Sonic". NewJeans, the first K-pop girl group to perform at "Lollapalooza Chicago", attracted over 70,000 spectators, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of their first U.S. performance. At "Summer Sonic" in Japan, the venue was so packed that entry restrictions were imposed during their noon performance.
Their explosive popularity on social media platforms played a significant role. YouTube shorts featuring "Super Shy" garnered 670,000 videos across various countries like South Korea, the U.S., India, the UK, Turkey, and Brazil. On TikTok, 940,000 related videos were created, sparking a global challenge trend.
At the core of NewJeans' whirlwind success lies their "great music". With this album, they stepped out of the conventional K-pop mold, pursuing a more relatable and natural sound. Their bold strategy of producing music videos for all tracks, including the triple title songs, paid off. Collaborations with global brands like Powerpuff Girls, Apple, and Spotify added value beyond mere collaboration. NewJeans, now a cultural phenomenon, is expected to further expand their global footprint.
